We’re obsessed with Portugal, and we think that you should be too.

Nestled on the south-western edge of Europe, Portugal has more rugged landscapes, empty beaches, mountainside vineyards, ancient cities, and fairytale castles than you can shake a stick at. It was awarded the Entrepreneurial Region of the Year just last year. Alongside its relaxed pace of life, relatively low cost of living and great internet connectivity, it’s no surprise then that Portugal is becoming a European hub for Startups, digital nomads, and location independent workers.

  7. Eat, drink and be merry at the Olhão Seafood Festival and Ílhavo Cod Festival Food festivals in Portugal

    Taking place from August 9-14th in the town of Olhão near Faro in the Algarve, the Seafood Festival is the biggest in Europe and attracts over 60,000 visitors every year. Food, wine, music and amazing views make this one of the country’s best gastronomic events. Tickets cost just €9.

    A few days later from August 17-21th, you can enjoy a unique festival devoted to the humble cod fish in Ílhavo. This Cod festival promises cod-related dishes by the bucket, with plenty of regional wines thrown in for good measure.

  8. Get your fill of pasteis de nata

    We can’t get enough of these crisp, flaky pastry Portuguese custard tarts dusted with cinnamon. There’s a reason the queues at Lisbon‘s world-famous Pasteis de Belém snake around the pavement and that’s because the custard tarts there really are the best in the world. If the queues turn you off, go to Manteigaria Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata or simply head to any local cafe or bakery where you’ll find the second best pasteis de nata in the world.

  19. Go wild celebrating at the Festas dos Santos (Santos populares) Santos populares in Portugal

    Throughout the month of June, cities and towns throughout the country hold festivals and parties to celebrate their saints. Lisbon celebrates St. Anthony (São Antonio) on the 12th and 13th of June. Sintra and Evora, among others, celebrate St. Peter (São Pedro) on June 29th. On the longest night of the year, June 23rd, the entire population of Porto hits the streets to celebrate the festival of St. John (São João) – don’t be surprised if you get whacked on the head with a large, inflatable hammer (one of the stranger St John’s Day customs!).

    Festival Sudoeste (Southwest Festival) is a large, 5-day music festival that takes place every August near Zambujeira do Mar, in southern Portugal.  The festival has several stages and this year’s headliners include Steve Aoki, Damian Marley, James Morrison, and Seu Jorge. Pack your tent, your sunscreen, plenty of water, and head on over from August 3-7th.

    One of Europe’s biggest and most successful alternative music festivals, this year’s Super Bock Super Rock will be held in Lisbon‘s Parque das Nações from July 14-16th. Iggy Pop, The National and Bloc Party are all confirmed headliners this year.
